Spindrift - Whitby (2022)
Original media: Inks, acrylics, gouache, watercolour, pencils, gold leaf and gold thread.
I completed this is the middle of summer, but I started it in February half term when we fled the Calder Valley as the roads flooded and headed for the sea! We stayed in Staithes and our rented house had run out of heating oil, so we slept in hats and jumpers. It was bitterly cold, but the skies were blue and the sea sparkling. We walked along the beach at Sandsend and then drove to West Bay in Whitby. The children were freezing, so they left me to stand at the waters edge drawing the waves. I had to keep walking in the water to get the angle right! I’ve had this painting in my head for ages and needed to draw the rocks and the sea. The wind kicked up seaspray, making everything taste salty. Spindrift is the spray blown from cresting waves. I think it’s a beautiful word.
