Byland Marshes (2022)
Original media: Inks, gouache, acrylics, watercolour, 23 carat gold leaf and gold thread.
Painted for 'Whispering Ruins' - an exhibition of paintings based on North Yorkshire Abbeys at Chantry House Gallery, Ripley.
In Autumn 2021, I took a little road trip to draw abbeys in North Yorkshire. I’d never seen Byland Abbey before this. It was a misty weekday, and I had it all to myself. The mosaic floors inside (which they cover with turf in winter) were a wonderful surprise to me as I love pattern and tiles. I took tile motifs from inside and added them to the autumn colours in the hedges around. I walked up and through the woods in the mizzle, and came back to this view of the abbey behind the marshland.
