Stoodley Pike (2012)
Original media: Inks, gouache, acrylics, gold leaf and gold thread.
Measures 120cm x 60cm (mounted)
I painted this for Hattie, who loves Stoodley Pike. The first time she walked up there was with her best friend Iris, and it made a huge impression on her; she sought images of it out in photos and on maps. We all walked up the following Boxing day, and I drew this view on the way down, having just about recovered from being wind-blasted at the very top. I didn't like the pitch black walk up the steps inside the monument; Hattie was much braver than I! I was very taken by the way the trees seemed to be framed within the shapes of these old farm buildings. The greens of the bare trees against the bare blackened brick work was very striking.
