Whitby Abbey (2022)
Original media: Inks, gouache, acrylics, watercolour, 23 carat gold leaf and gold thread.
Painted for 'Whispering Ruins' – an exhibition of paintings based on North Yorkshire Abbeys at Chantry House Gallery, Ripley.
There’s no where quite like Whitby Abbey for atmosphere! We visited in February half term and stayed in Staithes. We left the Calder Valley in the middle of a storm, and the roads were flooding as we made our escape. The heating failed in our rented cottage and we had to sleep in hats and jumpers. It was cold on the coast, but with sunshine and bright blue skies. The abbey itself was closed in the morning as the winds were so strong. It was still cold and windy when I drew for this painting, sat down by the little lake. The rest of my family were sheltering in a sunny spot, with their backs against sun-warmed stone pillars.
