Midwinter Sun At Gibson Mill (2024)
Original media: Inks, acrylics, egg tempera, gouache, watercolour, pencil, pastel, gold thread and 23 carat gold leaf.
Painted for Heart Gallery’s 18th Birthday Exhibition, September 2024.
I keep going back to Gibson Mill to paint. It’s a beautiful, silent spot and I love it especially in the early morning when there’s no one around. The light is never the same twice, and it’s always pretty, even on the gloomiest of days. The mist often collects in the valley, either early in the morning or as the rain is clearing. This was a hazy, midwinter sun that highlighted the edges of things. The thing about the Calder Valley is that lots of places lose the sun completely for a month or two in winter. It makes us appreciate it all the more when we find it.
