Hebden Bridge (2024)
Original media: Inks, gouache, acrylics, watercolour, coloured pencil, gold leaf and gold thread.
Painted for 'Engineers & Chocolatiers' - a solo exhibition to celebrate Calderdale at Bankfield Museum, 2024.
Home! For nearly 20 years now, which is longer than I’ve ever lived anywhere. I decided this had to be all about the water, so there’s The River Calder at the bottom, meeting Hebden Water, and crossing under The Rochdale Canal. The Bridges all line up with the red and white wrought iron St George’s Bridge at the top, then The Packhorse Bridge, Market Street Bridge, the footbridge that joins the two schools (we’ve always called it School Bridge), and the Tow Path. At the top of the painting is ‘Snob Row’ peeking over the top of the huge retaining wall holding Birchcliffe in place. On the left is Windsor Road, then Linden Mill, the Town Hall, Hope Gallery (formerly The Hole in the Wall Pub), the end of Old Gate (where there is almost always washing hanging out and I do love a washing line). Heart Gallery in the former Arts Centre, and the back of Primrose Terrace next to the canal.
To the right is Stubbings School, The White Lion Pub, Innovation Mill, Hope Street Methodist Church, the Picture House and the wonderful Trades Club. I couldn’t get everything in, but I had a very good try.
