Cragg Vale (2024)
Original media: Inks, gouache, acrylics, watercolour, coloured pencil, gold leaf and gold thread.
Painted for 'Engineers & Chocolatiers' - a solo exhibition to celebrate Calderdale at Bankfield Museum, 2024.
Cragg Vale is full of good things. My children play in a Christmas concert at the church every year and the trees in the church yard are full of fairy lights. It looks very enchanting. This is also the end of Leg one of the Calderdale Relay fell race, and the beginning of leg two. Both of which I’ve run many times! The Church and the Hinchliffe pub are at the heart of the village. Since my Lost Houses project back in 2016, I’ve been fascinated with New Cragg Hall; the beautiful Arts and Crafts house, home to Helen Hinchliffe and her young husband Algy, that stood for less than 20 years before burning down under mysterious circumstances. There’s not much left of their legacy but the old gate house and the grand vicarage (and the pub that bears the family name). I love the green meadow that runs alongside the river and the beech woods. It’s at its most beautiful in the autumn.
