Rievaulx (2022)
Original media: Inks, gouache, acrylics, watercolour, 23 carat gold leaf and gold thread.
Painted for 'Whispering Ruins' - an exhibition of paintings based on North Yorkshire Abbeys at Chantry House Gallery, Ripley.
Towards the end of autumn 2021 I escaped on a little drawing trip to an area of North Yorkshire with a cluster of Abbeys. I knew it was closed, but Rievaulx was so close to Byland, where I had spent the morning drawing, that I stopped off anyway for a walk. I walked along the lanes by the river, and this was the view back across the fields, with a splendid big oak tree framing the ruins. You can see the Tuscan temple at Rievaulx Terrace, hidden in the woods on the hill.
