Follies at Studley Royal (2022)
Original media: Inks, gouache, acrylics, watercolour, 23 carat gold leaf and gold thread.
Painted for 'Whispering Ruins' - an exhibition of paintings based on North Yorkshire Abbeys at Chantry House Gallery, Ripley.
Towards the end of autumn, 2021 I escaped on a little drawing trip to an area of North Yorkshire with a cluster of Abbeys. The last stop on my way home was Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal. I walked along the river, away from the abbey on a cold bright morning with a brilliant blue sky. I sat on the raised bank above the moon pond to draw this: The octagonal tower and the Temple of Piety surrounded by autumn colours. I especially love the Octagonal tower, hidden in the trees. I’d love to be allowed to sit in there and paint the water gardens through the seasons.
