October Willow (2021)
Original media: Inks, gouache, acrylics, watercolour, loose pigment, collage, gold thread, 23 carat gold leaf
Painted as part of The Nightingale Project: a series of trees and nature inspired by lock down in The Calder Valley from March 2020 to March 2021 (and the brief escapes from it over the summer).
This twisted willow stands in the garden of the lodge house at Hardcastle Crags. It looks like someone has knotted its trunk. It’s lovely in every season and I’ve drawn it often. But on this October day, when it was almost bare, it looked like a Kay Nielsen illustration.
