Cloud Inversion (2021)
Original media: Inks, gouache, acrylics, watercolour, pencil, 23 carat gold leaf and gold thread
Painted for ‘Woodland Paths & Grand Days Out', a solo exhibition at Bankfield Museum, Halifax.
In lock-down, January of 2021, it was my day for home schooling and lessons were not going well. It was bitterly cold and slushy in the valley bottom, but I decided that we needed to get some fresh air so the children and I strode up the steep hill to Horsehold. The higher we climbed, the snowier it got, but it was still very murky. On the cobbled stretch at the top of the hill we broke through the cloud and it was like another world! The sky was blue behind a thin veil of cloud, through which Stoodley Pike kept appearing and disappearing. The branches of the trees were heavy with sugar snow - too powdery to build snowballs with so the children threw it up in the air like handfuls of dust. It was too beautiful, so we abandoned lessons and walked all the way up to Erringdon Moor where they made snow angels. We’ve talked about that afternoon often since and I’m so glad that we played hookie.
